  • Celebrating St. Patrick's Day - March 12th

Irish music continues to flow from the Gym as Mrs. Ni Lorcain teaches the students Irish dancing.  What a fun and COVID-friendly activity!  To celebrate this learning, and the great saint, St. Patrick, we will be celebrating all things Irish on Friday, March 12th.  This will be a dress down day for all students who can display a “touch of the Irish” – dress in green, or be really creative and come as a leprechaun, or even dress as St. Patrick!  All of the grades have P.E. on Fridays, so the whole school will be dancing their way through the last day before Spring Break!!

  • Spring Break

This year the school will be closed for Spring Break beginning on Monday, March 15th and ending on Friday, March 26th.  We are hopeful that the school will safely reopen on Monday, March 29th, but schools have been asked by the Ministry of Education to remind everyone that this will be dependent on citizens following the Public Health Orders.  Over the last week the number of cases of COVID-19 and the new variants has slowly been creeping up, and we need those numbers to decrease.  In order for that to happen, all non-essential travel should be avoided, and gatherings and events should also not be occurring at this time.  To review the latest information about the provincial restrictions and the Public Health Orders, please click here.

  • Spring Break Cleaning

The school will be getting a good cleaning over Spring Break, and that includes all of the tile floors and carpets.  Our janitors have requested that the students take their indoor shoes and any boots home during the break so that the rubber mats that they sit on can also be cleaned – this will make things much easier.  So, your children will be bringing these items home with them on Friday, March 12th, and we would ask that you send them back to school with these items when we return on March 29th.

  • Thunder Club is Closing - The YMCA Kids Club is Opening

After many years of operating the Thunder Club, our before and after school club, the Thunder Club will be closing its doors.  However, as one door closes, another opens, and we are happy to announce that the YMCA Kids Club will be taking over before and after school care at our school.  While it was nice to have school staff that the students were familiar with running our program, there are many benefits to having the YMCA offer this service to families.  They include:

    • your children will still be looked after at the school, so the transition from care to school in the mornings, and school to care in the afternoons will continue to be an easy one
    • this will be a licensed program, and therefore parents will receive an income tax receipt for the fees that they pay
    • there will be subsidies offered for families who find it difficult to pay for before/after school care – the fee structure through the YMCA will be different than ours
    • the YMCA program will offer their service for the same hours as ours, and maybe even a little longer after school, PLUS they will also be open on Pro-D Days
We are hopeful that the YMCA will receive their license to open after Spring Break, but regardless we will keep the Thunder Club operating until the YMCA Kids Club opens their doors.  We are hoping for an absolutely seamless transition!  All families who currently attend the Thunder Club received an email this week with this information, but now with the opening of a licensed program and the benefits that come with it, there may be other families who are interested.  If that is your family, please click here to read their Expression of Interest and complete their included survey as soon as possible, as space will fill up fast.  While we are not sure of their actual start date, where the survey asks you to fill in the date that you would need their service to start, please put April 6th.  We are hopeful that this will be their start date, but it could be a little sooner or a little later, depending on final licensing through Fraser Health.
  • Thunder Club Sale

As you can imagine, after operating for many years the Thunder Club has quite an accumulation of toys, games, craft items, movies, etc.  We have cleaned out the cupboards, moved some of the items to the Resource Room and classrooms, but there are still many, many items that need a good home.  As the weather is supposed to be nice next week, on Monday, March 8th we will be holding a “by donation” sale of these Thunder Club items.  Tables will be set up outside near the school’s entrance from 1:00pm – 2:00pm and we will be selling these items with the following COVID protocols in place:

    • this will be a sale for adults only, and all adults must wear a mask
    • if you want to see an item, please ask school staff to give you a better view of the item – we will be wearing gloves and can open containers or boxes, etc.
    • please bring a bag or box with you to collect items that you would like
    • traffic will move in one direction along the tables that are set up – if you want to go back for a second look at something you will need to line up by the cones which mark the physically distanced waiting area, and come back along the tables a second time
    • this will be a cash only sale, and unfortunately we will not be providing change – if you want to make a $1 donation for an item but only have a ten dollar bill, well you can either take a few other items or consider this a nice large donation to the school!!
    • any items that remain on the tables at 2:00pm will be donated to charity
These items have been loved by the students who attend the Thunder Club, so we know your children will love them as well!
  • Work Bee Today

Our next Work Bee will take place today, Saturday, March 6th from 9:00am – 2:00pm at the school.  If you could bring gloves for inside or outside work, and any cordless gardening tools, that would be appreciated.  As always, we are very grateful for all of your hard work.

  • Gift Cards to be Distributed on Tuesday

Thank you to everyone who participated in the recent Gift Card fundraiser, which was a success.  The school brought in over $2,300 as a result of this effort!  Thank you again to our participating gift card sponsors, including Vi-La Palace, Jasmine Garden Restaurant, StrEATS restaurant, Wong’s Farm Market and Chef-Boss Culinary.  Also, congratulations to our 3 families who each won a $100 gift card for their participation – the Kumar, Parnell and Jensen families.  Thanks to everyone for their efforts!

  • Zumbathon - May 14, 2021 - request for prize donations

We would like to introduce our biggest fundraiser of the year:  Zumbathon 2021, which will be held on Friday, May 14th!  Due to the pandemic restrictions, we have decided that this year we will change our Annual Walkathon into a Zumbathon.  This event will be held with all the necessary protocols in place.

This year we are returning to a Prize Raffle for the Zumbathon Prizes.  Students will earn 1 raffle ticket for every $10 that they personally raise in pledges.  The students can then use these raffle tickets to put into the prize raffle of their choice.

The PFA has already started asking many businesses to donate prizes.  We are also asking the school families and businesses if they would consider donating a new item or cash to purchase a prize, so that we have a variety of prizes for all ages and interests.  If you are interested in donating a prize, please contact Juana Veters by clicking here.  Thank you for your consideration!

We look forward to sharing more information about Zumbathon with you after Spring Break, including what specific project we will be raising funds for this year!

  • Daily Health Check App

The Province of BC has created a new Daily Health Check App for parents to use each morning to assess the health of their child before they head off to school.  This is a fun and interactive way to find out if you should stay home until you feel better, or get further health information by calling 811.  To use the Daily Health Check App on your desktop computer, please click here.  To download the app on your mobile device, please click here.

  • Daily Health Check

Parents are asked to complete a Daily Health Check of their children each morning before they come to school.  Please assess your child for the following symptoms:

    • Fever
    • Chills
    • Cough or worsening of chronic cough
    • Shortness of breath
    • Loss of sense of smell or taste
    • Diarrhea
    • Nausea and vomiting

If your child has one of those symptoms, excluding fever, they should stay home for 24 hours from when the symptom started.  If the symptom improves, they may return to school when they feel well enough.  If the symptom persists or worsens, seek a health assessment.  If your child has two or more of the symptoms, or they have a fever, you should seek a health assessment for them.
