Religion
Join us for First Friday Mass on Dec. 2nd at 8:00 A.M. at St. James.
Advent in Gr. 6 – We will be celebrating Advent with a journey through the Old Testament following Jesus’ lineage. This will be a starting point for a more in-depth look at the Old Testament in January. The students will be making their own set of symbols for the Jesse Tree and are encouraged to bring them home and celebrate the Jesse Tree with their families.
Language Arts
We will be finishing our teacher directed Novel Study in the next 2 weeks. Our novel, Out of My Mind, focused on the concept of inclusion and what it really looks like in a classroom and school community. Through the Nelson Literacy program we will look at a number of short stories that tie to both our Science and Social Studies themes and explore skills primarily in gathering information to form opinions, make inferences and compare/contrast information.
Math
Gr.6 is continuing to work their way through the first module of Jump Math. Most students are experiencing a great deal of success with this Math program and we are “ahead of schedule”. I review their progress daily and I encourage the students to ask me for help and clarification if they are having difficulty with a given concept.
Science
Gr. 6 will be presenting their Science Projects on the Solar System from now until Dec. 16th. 3 – 4 students will be presenting each day. They have been asked to choose a day that works best for them and sign up. They have had an opportunity to see presentations from a few of their classmates and should be very clear as to what is expected. This project is being assessed from a formative point of view as this is their first experience with inquiry-based learning. The next project I will be able to set criterion and apply rubrics, which I will teach to in advance.
We have also been working on a sub-unit on sustainability in our local community, particularly Gardner Park. This unit has supported our School Theme – Care for our Common Home.
Social Studies
We are continuing to work our way through the concept of “governance”. This will be studied from a Biblical Worldview with an emphasis on social justice.
CHRISTMAS CONCERT: There are 18 Gr. 6 students in the cast this year! They are working hard and are well prepared for the upcoming Concert. The remaining students will be doing their part by working on an art project to help decorate the Gym for the concert.
HOLLY SALES: Dec. 5th – 9th from 2:30 – 2:45 P.M. in front of the school.
Gr. 6 students will be selling bags of fresh Holly for $5.00/bag to help offset the cost of their Outdoor Education Program in Gr. 7.
